If you're reading this and kicking yourself because you missed it, the popularity of this event makes it very likely we'll have another some time next year so watch this space! In the meantime take a look at Mini and Junior tennis page for furtther details on coaching groups that YOU can become involved in right now.

Loads of thanks to all who helped out on the day (too many to mention here) but especially to Elizabeth Shelley (for her fantastic organising), Eileen Maddison (great refreshments), Tina Whybrow, David and Kay Charlton and BMTC Coaches Jason White and Shaun Watson.

NEWS HEADLINES FROM THE AGM

The following headlines arose from the Annual General Meeting held in the Sports Pavillion on Friday 13th March at 7.30-9pm. Many thanks to everyone who attended and especially those who volunteered their help and support for the forthcoming year:

1. BMTC APPOINTS A NEW TREASURER

BMTC are delighted to announce the appointment of a new Treasurer after Andrew Williamson stepped down in November 2008. Ian Warton-Woods will assume the position. We are very grateful to Ian for volunteering to fill this very important role.

2. RESURFACING OF COURTS

It has been proposed that all 3 macadam courts will be resurfaced this year. This work is scheduled to happen at the beginning of April, weather permitting, and is likely to take approximatey 5 days. Unfortunately the courts will be unusable during this work (but much better to play on afterwards!). It is vital that weather conditions permit so we will update you nearer the time as to when play will stop/resume. Thank you in advance for your patience.

3. THE TENNIS DEVELOPMENT GROUP WILL RECONVENE

It was decided that the Tennis Development Group, that was set up last year to help drive BMTC forward with positive change, will reconvene. The purpose of this group was to establish a proactive plan, partly in preparation for Clubmark application. Anyone interested in joining this small group of volunteers and commit to the regular meetings should contact its chair, Phil Brough on 07968 681571.

4. CLUBMARK APPLICATION - 'we're almost there!'

Music to the ears! BMTC will NOT get left behind!!

The application file that is being put together in an effort to help BMTC achieve Clubmark status has now ***almost*** been completed. Ever so many thanks for everyone who has contributed and helped gather this huge file together, and especially to Elizabeth Shelley for her unwavering enthusiasm and comittment in organising and coordinating it all. A fun Quiz night that was held in the Sports Pavillion on Friday 14th November was a huge success raising £170 for much-needed tennis club funds. Many thanks to Martin Jackson who always does a great job as Quizmaster. Thanks also to all who helped with catering and the bar on the night.

BMTC Annual Tournament 2008

More than 20 people turned up for a very enjoyable tennis tournament on Sunday 14th September. Even the rain managed to keep away for the afternoon. CONGRATULATIONS to ANNETTE CARTER and BEN WHITEHEAD who are this year's champions! Thanks to everyone who took part and raised valuable funds for the club.

BMTC Development Group

The development group recently invited all its members to help with some cosmetic improvements to what looks like a somewhat forgotten tennis pavillion! A painting afternoon was held on Sunday 22nd June which has begun to smarten up the appearance of the pavillion. Even an escaped prisoner turned up to help, and was (re)captured in the photograph below!

Many thanks to all of those who turned up to help out. Further days to continue this work are proposed in due course and will be advertised here.

Tennis club news

Junior tennis taster Day a HUGE success!

The tennis courts were overflowing with children, all eager to learn new skills, when more than 30 children took part in a free tennis taster afternoon on Saturday 3 May. Eileen Maddison said, ‘It was tremendous to see so many children enjoying themselves. Tennis can be quite a challenging game, but they all set about it so enthusiastically. A good time was had by all.’  Click here for the Belper News article

The session consisted of a mixture of drills, practical exercises and games, all under the expert guidance of the Belper Meadows coaching team.

The event was so successful that the club hopes to run similar events in future and has plans for an adult taster session later in the year. In the meantime, youngsters wanting to build on their newly-acquired skills can come along to coaching sessions at the club on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings. More details of these are available from Jason White on 07962 186590.

Jason organised the tournament which was held on the Saturday before Christmas and had 16 entries, which was very good for a damp winter Saturday! He was helped by Shaun Watson. Every one seemed to enjoy themselves and many said they were keen to do more. For information on how to get your kids involved next time, click here

Summer 2007 Floods

The tennis courts (along with football, hockey and cricket areas) were flooded when the Derwent burst its banks during the awful June weather. This not only left a lot of sludge but it also put the floodlights back out of action again. The courts have now all been professionally cleaned and the lights (on the 2 main courts in front of the pavillion) are working again. Thanks to all who helped in the restoration process!
